Magpie season has arrived in Latrobe Valley with a huge week of VFLW ahead as the Collingwood Football Club comes to Morwell.

The Pies’ VFLW outfit will tackle the Western Bulldogs at Morwell Recreation Reserve this Saturday but the women’s footy fiesta is kicking off early with a positive coaching workshop at the Morwell Bowling Club this Wednesday.

Collingwood VFLW head coach Penny Cula-Reid will lead the two-hour session aimed at coaches and officials, discussing what positive coaching means on and off the football field with personal support from an experienced elite mentor.

Cula-Reid is a veteran player and coach having racked up more than 200 games for the St Kilda Sharks VFLW side over 13 years before joining the Magpies for the inaugural AFLW season in 2017.

She became the club’s first female football coach and made an emphatic first impression by leading the VFLW team to a minor premiership in its inaugural season.

The 2018 VFLW coach of the year winner said she was keen to share some tips of the trade with local coaches at all levels of the game.

“We’re really fortunate in having an ongoing partnership with the Latrobe Valley and being able to grow an awareness of footy in the region,” Cula-Reid said.

“The very basis of our game today springs from grassroots, highlighting the importance of educating coaches at all levels of the game.

“I’m really looking forward in returning to Morwell and excited to work with the individuals that are committed to growing the sport we love.”

Cula-Reid will be in action again on Saturday when her top of the table Magpies face the third placed Bulldogs in a massive matchup at Morwell.

Both sides have lost just once this season with this round seven clash looming as pivotal in the premiership race.

Saturday’s match starts at 11.30am at the Morwell Recreation Reserve.

Wednesday’s positive coaching workshop runs from 6-8pm at the Morwell Bowling Club; to register visit https://bit.ly/2Xy6RmO
