A new $85 million Victorian Government investment in sport infrastructure and support programs for the Latrobe Valley will create more than 575 local jobs through the construction and operation of facilities and support for local community programs, which will have flow on benefits to the rest of the Valley.
The Government, through the Latrobe Valley Authority, is working in partnership with the Collingwood Football Club to draw on their expertise and maximise the benefit from these facilities.
The centerpiece of this $85 million investment will be the $46 million Gippsland Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre. This new community facility will address demand for family sport and recreation, support the region’s high-performing athletes and bring major events the Latrobe Valley.
The community sporting package includes:
- $46 million for a new Gippsland Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Traralgon
- $17 million to redevelop the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports and Entertainment Complex in Traralgon
- $4 million to upgrade Morwell Recreation Reserve
- $1.7 million to upgrade the Latrobe Sports and Entertainment Complex in Morwell
- $3 million to upgrade the Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe
- $1.4 million for the Sale and Traralgon Tennis Centres
- $5 million for 9 local reserves to be upgraded
Partnering with leading Victorian Sports Clubs
The Victorian Government, through the LVA, has formed a long-term partnership with Collingwood Football Club that will bring major sporting organisations including Swimming Australia, Melbourne Victory and more to the Valley. These clubs bring with them a full calendar of fixtures and pre season games, regional carnivals and training camps.
The State Government’s investment will fund major events, services, and the construction of the facilities,- which are valuable local community assets. The Collingwood Football Club and its sporting partners will be able to use the new high-level infrastructure to support local community programs, run training camps and play games in the region.
Local kids will have access to some of the best sporting facilities and community programs. The wider community will also benefit. The community and local sporting teams will be able to access the new and upgraded facilities for training. Families will be able to enjoy playing on these reserves and swimming at the pool.
Flow-on benefits for the Latrobe Valley
Small businesses will have the opportunity to service the new and upgraded facilities that will need services including catering, cleaning, personal training, masseurs, administrative support, and marketing.
Locals will have access to the best sports action in their own towns.
Local businesses can expect more visitors to the region and tourists who will want to spend money in the Valley’s shops and cafes, hotels and motels – all of which diversify the economy and create local jobs.
Planning for the upgrades and new builds
Work will start immediately on the planning for the new and upgraded infrastructure, which will provide employment opportunities for local designers, project managers, contractors and tradespeople.
Through the Victorian Industry Participation Policy the Victorian Government is improving opportunities for local suppliers to create more new jobs and grow the economy. We will work with local businesses and councils to make the most of the opportunities for local employment that this package provides.
